Bearing Design

(Based on IDOT Bridge Manual 2023)

Step 1: Determine Size and Type of Bearing

(A) Select the plate size based on the loading for Types I & II bearings.

Provide following design parameters :

Dead Load Reaction (kips)

Live Load Reaction without Impact (kips)

(B) Find out the type of Bearing required.

Provide following design parameters :

Expansion Length (ft)

Is this bridge located in Seismic Performance Zones 2, 3 or 4 ?

No Yes

The previous assumption of Types I or II is not valid and it needs to be verified for Type III as follow:

Step 2: Get the Detailing Dimensions

Provide following design parameters :

Percent Slope (%)

Bottom Flange Width, W_f (in)

Bottom Flange Thickness (in)

Strength I Reaction without Impact (kip)

Strength I Reaction with Impact (kip)

Expansion from 50° normal temperature (in)

Anchor bolt diameter (in)

Yield strength of Bearing plates (fy)

50 ksi 36 ksi

Is bearing stiffener present ?

Yes No
